According to John Hopkins University's Center for Summer Learning, research reveals the following:

1.  All young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer.

2.  Low-income students experience an average summer learning loss in reading achievement of over two months.

3.  On average, students lose approximately 2.6 months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months.

4.  Large numbers of students who qualify for federally subsidized meals do not have the same level of access to nutritious meals during the summer as they do during the school year.

5.  Studies show that out-of-school time is a dangerous time for unsupervised children and teens.

To address those issues, Jefferson Youth Foundation, Inc. has designed our summer camp around the following:

1.  Fun, engaging, educational activities for six weeks starting Monday June 4, 2011 and ending Friday, July 13, 2012.  Camp is scheduled to operate full days Monday through Friday during this period from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.

2.  A focus on literacy initiatives (explicit instruction, small group instruction, activities aligned to state standards, embedded content learning, diversity in cultural backgrounds, etc.).

3.  Activities incorporating the basic skills of computation and problem solving that relate to everyday life.  Lessons in acceptance of individual differences and cultural diversity as well as conflict resolution and team-building.

4.  Nutritious meals every day provided by Jefferson Parish Public Schools' Child Nutrition Department.

5.  Structured activities that are supervised by qualified, experienced staff.
